The Myths That Deny the Dignity of Adoption in Nigeria
Thirteen beliefs still held in homes, religious organisations and communities across Nigeria — addressed not with judgement, but with truth, compassion and evidence.
Misinformation about adoption causes real harm — to children who wait longer for families, to parents who carry stigma they don't deserve, and to birth mothers judged rather than understood. Every myth below is one we hear often in Nigeria. Each truth is offered with evidence and compassion, not judgement.

Family & Belonging
Myths about whether an adopted child and their family are truly, permanently one family.
Parenthood is built through love, presence, sacrifice and commitment — not only biology. Millions of adoptive families around the world, including in Nigeria, have shown that the bond formed through adoption is every bit as real and as deep as one formed through birth.
Because family is built by love, not biology.
The stigma is real — but it does not define you. Every adoptive family that loves with confidence helps change perceptions. You are not alone.
Every family that lives with dignity makes dignity easier for the next family.
Under Nigeria's Child's Rights Act, a legally adopted child has the same rights as a biological child, including the right to inherit and to bear the family name, once an adoption order has been finalised by the court.
By law, your child's place in the family is permanent and equal.
Family in Nigeria has always extended beyond blood — through fostering, naming, and communities raising children together. Choosing to adopt does not sever a family's heritage. It extends that heritage to a child who needed one.
Lineage is carried forward by love and commitment, not only by blood.
Once a Nigerian court grants a final adoption order, that adoption is permanent. The adoptive parents become the child's legal parents in every respect, and that relationship cannot be undone by a change of mind or a later claim.
Once it is final, it is final — your family is secure in law.
Faith & Adoption
Myths that treat adoption as a sign of weak faith, rather than a path many faiths affirm.
This belief reduces adoption to a transaction — a ritual to unlock fertility. It dishonours both the child and the family. The child you adopt is your child. They are not a stepping stone to another child.
They are the child you chose to love.
Adoption & Infertility
Myths that link a person's worth or faith to their ability to conceive.
Scripture includes powerful examples of children raised by families other than their birth parents — Moses, Esther and Jesus, who was raised by Joseph. Infertility is not a sign that God has failed you. For some families, adoption is not Plan B.
It is God's Plan A for them.
Adoption is a profound, intentional and beautiful way to build a family. Fertile couples can and do adopt. Choosing to adopt is not settling for less.
It is one of the most loving decisions a family can make.
Secrecy & Identity
Myths about hiding the truth from a child, or fearing what happens once they know it.
Children have a right to know their story. When shared with love, honesty and age-appropriate conversations, the truth strengthens trust and belonging. Secrets often cause far more harm than the truth.
Truth builds trust. Secrets break it.
A child's curiosity about their origins is not a rejection of the people who raised them. Wanting to know one's full story is a normal part of forming a secure identity, and it does not diminish the love between an adopted child and their parents. The two can exist fully, side by side.
Loving you and wanting to know your story are not in conflict.
A bond built over a lifetime of presence, care and love is not erased by curiosity about one's origins, or even by a reunion with birth family later in life. Many adoptees who search for or reconnect with their birth family do so without leaving the family who raised them — they simply gain a fuller picture of their own story.
The family that raised you does not lose you to the family that made you.
Trauma & Behaviour
Myths that judge a child's nature or future by the circumstances of their birth.
A child's future is not determined by the circumstances of their birth or by their biological parents alone. Every child is born with unique gifts and infinite potential. Love, stability and opportunity can transform the course of a child's life.
Potential is stronger than prejudice.
A child's character is not fixed by the circumstances of their birth or early months. With patience, consistency and genuine attachment, adopted children form secure, healthy bonds with their parents — the same as any child. Difficult behaviour in any child, adopted or not, is a signal to respond to with love, not a verdict on their nature.
Every child can attach, grow and thrive — given love, not labels.
